great location for:

With the white shimmering salt pans stretching as far as the eye can see the Makgadikgadi is a photographers dream. Covering around 10’000 square kilometers of the Kalahari, this huge pan was once the centre of a great lake which covered much of the region. In contrast to the vibrant floodplains of the Delta, this area is a unique eco system with its own subtle appeal. Walk with Bushmen, be surrounded, and often sat upon, by meerkats, quad bike on the pan and witness breath-taking night skies. During the summer rains, the pans are transformed into shallow lakes and boast huge numbers of flamingos and other birdlife. North of Makgadikgadi is the smaller Nxai Pan, renowned for it’s large springbok population and for ‘Baines Baobabs’, a group of trees that inspired the painter Thomas Baines in 1862 and have delighted travellers ever since.
