Covering much of Botswana, the Kalahari is derived from the Tswana word ‘Kgala’ meaning ‘great thirst’. The areas are vast and covered by red sand without any permanent water. The San Bushmen have lived here for generations and their way of life has barely changed in that time, adapting to the harsh environment. The Kalahari actually received too much rainfall, each year, to be classified as a true desert and amazingly wildlife thrives here. In summer, when rains come, animals such as springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest arrive in their thousands. These plains animals bring along with them great numbers of predators including the famous Kalahari black maned lion, cheetah, leopard and jackals. Brown Hyenas and wild dog are also found in the area. For enormous uninterrupted vistas, tranquillity and an appreciation for an ancient way of life, a Kalahari desert experience come highly recommended.
