Lake Kariba is the largest artificial lake and reservoir, by volume, in the world. It is half way between the Zambezi River’s source and mouth around 800 miles upstream of the Indian Ocean and lies along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Before Lake Kariba was filled, the existing vegetation was burnt, creating a thick layer of fertile soil on land that would become the lake bed. As a result the ecology of Lake Kariba is vibrant. Lake Kariba is a beautiful and atmospheric lake which will enchant you with dramatic vistas and stunning sunsets. The Matusadona National Park is located on the shores of Lake Kariba and boasts a small number of excellent lodges.
